As every 4 years since 2004, the Temenos screenings in Arcadia, Greece, have been a unique experience that one could compare to the visions people saw at the Ancient Aesclipieia (The sacred places of Aesclipeios in ancient Greece). Personally, i really enjoyed the parts of “Eros, o Basileus” incorporated in the “Eniaios” film. During the Temenos 2012 event, for the first time in the Temenos history, there were two parallel presentations inspired by and referring to  the work of Gregory Markopoulos and Robert Beavers: Evie M. Bras’s documentary on Gregory Markopoulos that was presented at the Lyssarea village square, and my architectural project on the Temenos presented as an exhibition in one of the village’s traditional houses. In Gregory Markopoulos’s writings, one can see the filmmaker’s vision to create a permanent space for his and R. Beavers’s  films and writings, in order to reconstitute the lost unity between the archive and the film. This is the first time an official architectural proposal on Markopoulos’s vision is made and it is presented in his birthplace in direct relation to the Temenos screenings. Personally, i would like to thank one more time all the people who contributed to the realization of this project (i mention them in the text of the exhibition) and especially Mr Robert Beavers.

As tutor during the easa007 architectural event at Eleusis, Greece, I designed and organized the workshop: “Fashion+Architecture: Persephone-the bride-virginity”. The goal of this installation was on a first level to make the boundaries between fashion and architecture blurred and on a second level to explore whether this installation can operate as a symbol in relation to the eleusinian myth of Demeter and Persephone.

This is the text referring to the lecture, as published on the ArtLocus website (http://artlocus.wordpress.com/tag/δέσποινα-ζαχαροπούλου/) and in the printed ArtLocus Catalogue:

“Despina Zacharopoulou  is one of the ArtLocus artistic associates.

She is about to graduate from the NTUA School of Architecture and her final project is on Gregory Markopoulos’s “Temenos”. In 2007 she  presented the lecture “Memorials-Mysteries” where she tried to associate the underground Memorials with the Eleusinian Mysteries.  During the same year, she designed and organized the workshop/installation  “fashion+architecture: Persephone-thebride-virginity”, as a tutor at easa007.

She participates at the ArtLocus Festival with a lecture entitled “Eleusis-Ritual-Theater” that will be presented on august 22nd, at 20:00. Through the perspective of the architect there is the effort to determine whether the Eleusinian Mysteries through ritual can contribute to a metaphysical-ritualistic theater; a theater that would try to indicate rather than represent, a theater of symbols that would constitute a revealing experience for the viewer in order to lead him through vision into a new existence.

«…Theater must be seen as a reflection (…) as a reflection of another reality which is archetypal and dangerous. A reality from which the basic Principles emerge, like dolphins, and then dive again and get lost in the darkness of the sea.»

Antonin Artaud, Le théâtre et son double
